HOW TO DESIGN CUSTOM SHIRT SLEEVES

HOW TO DESIGN CUSTOM SHIRT SLEEVES

The sleeve is an outstanding print location that is often overlooked. Ideal for a range of brand messages, it can accommodate everything from a simple logo on a short sleeve tee to an intricate design on a long sleeve shirt. In this post, we cover the basics of t-shirt sleeve design.

WHY PRINT ON THE SLEEVE?

WHY PRINT ON THE SLEEVE?

Adding a custom-printed sleeve can transform an otherwise standard t-shirt design into something exceptional. Although we print thousands of t-shirts daily, fewer than one in five orders includes a sleeve logo. A thoughtfully designed sleeve detail enhances the brand, helping it stand out.

SLEEVE LOGO SIZES AND LOCATIONS

SLEEVE LOGO SIZES AND LOCATIONS

Sleeve printing opens up a surprising variety of options. Start with the basics, then let your creativity flow. Here are the six most popular sleeve print locations for custom designs, including guidelines on size and placement, design tips, and examples.

STANDARD SLEEVE

A typical sleeve print measures between 2-4 inches in width, positioned either 1 inch from the hem or 2 inches from the sleeve edge, centered on the shoulder seam. This versatile size and placement are suitable for nearly any simplified logo design.

SMALL AT THE HEM

Smaller sleeve prints, typically 1-3 inches wide, are also popular. Positioned 1 inch from the hem and centered on the shoulder seam, this option works well for minimalist typographic logos or icons.

SHOULDER SLEEVE

A typical sleeve print measures between 2-4 inches in width, positioned either 1 inch from the hem or 2 inches from the sleeve edge, centered on the shoulder seam. This versatile size and placement are suitable for nearly any simplified logo design.

STANDARD LONG-SLEEVE

Long-sleeve prints are usually placed vertically, with a maximum length of about 15 inches (top to bottom) and a width up to 5 inches (side to side). These designs often feature text, like a company or team name.

ARMBAND LONG-SLEEVE

An armband print offers a unique customization option, wrapping horizontally around the bicep. These designs are typically 1-3 inches high, up to 5 inches wide, and are positioned about 6 inches below the shoulder seam.

WRIST LONG-SLEEVE

A wrist print on a long-sleeve shirt mirrors the hem print on a short-sleeve tee. Typically between 1-3 inches in size, it’s placed 1 inch from the wrist seam or 4 inches from the sleeve’s edge. This spot is highly visible, making it an excellent choice for a logo, especially for professionals like hospitality workers whose hands are frequently in view.

SLEEVE CUSTOMIZATION METHODS

SLEEVE CUSTOMIZATION METHODS

Almost any printing method can be applied to the sleeve. Familiarizing yourself with the available customization styles simplifies the process of designing an effective sleeve. Each method has unique advantages and limitations, so it's essential to consider them when planning your t-shirt sleeve design.

SCEEEN PRINTING

Traditional screen printing continues to be the preferred method. It’s ideal for straightforward sleeve prints and is the most cost-effective option, especially for larger orders. However, it has some limitations in color range and detail precision. For more on color and detail considerations, see the design tips section.

HEAT TRANSFER

Heat transfers have made a strong comeback as a great choice for sleeve designs. They allow for full-color prints and are ideal for preserving fine details, such as thin lines and intricate patterns. In some cases, you can even order the pre-printed transfers and apply them yourself.

EMBROIDERY

Embroidery creates a textured and shiny design that is highly durable. This method is the preferred choice for businesses looking to enhance their brand or convey a sense of legitimacy with a sophisticated sleeve logo on work shirts. However, the main drawback, aside from the cost, is its limited ability to accurately reproduce small details.

SLEEVE DESIGN TIPS

Almost any printing method can be applied to the sleeve. Familiarizing yourself with the available customization styles simplifies the process of designing an effective sleeve. Each method has unique advantages and limitations, so it's essential to consider them when planning your t-shirt sleeve design.

KEEP IT SMALL AND SIMPLE

When designing sleeve prints, it's best to keep it small. Most logos and designs need to be "simplified" to be effective on a sleeve. Eliminating ultra-fine lines and unnecessary details that may be lost when scaled down will help achieve a clear and recognizable branded result. Here are a few examples:

DESIGN FOR THE PRINT METHOD

When designing the sleeve, it's important to take the customization method into account to achieve the best results. Each technique has its own strengths. For screen printing, embroidery, or patches, it's advisable to simplify the artwork and limit the color palette. In contrast, heat transfers and digital printing allow for full color and gradients, making it possible to include fine lines and intricate details.

USE SINGLE COLOUR

While your logo may be vibrantly colorful, sleeve designs typically perform better with a limited color palette. Often, a single color can be just as effective and even more visually appealing. This approach is particularly beneficial for screen printing, as it helps keep costs down. For sleeve prints, we always recommend minimizing the number of colors used. Here are two examples:

MATCH THE MAIN DESIGN STYLE

Since you’ll likely have other print locations on your shirt, it's important for the sleeve print to match or complement the overall design. If there’s a dominant color in the front or back design, consider using that same color for your sleeve logo to create a cohesive appearance, even if it differs from your usual logo color.

COORDINATE THE SLEEVE WITH OTHER LOCATIONS

Plan your design with all the print locations in mind. Consider how everything will look together. For example, if you have a print on the left chest and want to add a sleeve print, choose the right sleeve so the designs aren’t next to each other.
